The Beach and Shelling

Live the Island Life

The kind of beach vacation dreams are made of.

Captiva is a sliver of an island on the Southwest Coast of Florida and South Seas has two-and-a-half glorious miles of pristine white-sand beaches perched on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. A treasure trove of sea shells, the beaches of Captiva Island are world-renowned shelling destinations. Spend your days building sandcastles and collecting seashells, looking for whelks, fighting conchs, lettered olives, and kitten’s paws. We have everything you need for a sun-drenched day at the beach: beach chairs, umbrellas, and towels are available at  Sunset Beach.

Imagine your toes in the sand, enjoying the sound of the ocean lapping on the shore. And early mornings on the beach watching the sunrise.  The island life beckons you.

Shelling for Beautiful Treasures

Whether you’re starting a collection or adding to one, the best kinds of souvenirs come from the sea.

Given that Captiva Island is made out of shells, it should come as no surprise that the beach is world-famous for shelling, and known as the Shell Island. And at South Seas, warm Gulf waters, an expansive two-and-a-half mile stretch of beach, and more than 400 different types of shells mean that you can get your fill of hundreds of beautiful seashells that have washed ashore. Expect to find conch, junonia, lightning whelk, tulip, sand dollar, and more.

So grab a bucket and hit the beach! An hour before or after low tide is best. And since the beach is different every day, you’ll make new discoveries every time.
