5 DayFamily Adventure in Captiva & Sanibel Island
South Seas Resort on Captiva Island is the ideal home base for an unforgettable Florida family vacation. Just a short drive away, neighboring Sanibel Island beckons with its world-famous shelling beaches, vibrant wildlife refuges, and hands-on educational experiences. Together, these islands create one of the best places for a family vacation in Florida, blending natural beauty, outdoor adventure, and warm island hospitality.
Day 1: Arrival & Island Exploration
Arrive at South Seas and let the island set the tone. Check into your family-friendly villa and take a relaxing walk along the sugar-sand shoreline, letting the kids lead the way as you settle into vacation mode.
After unpacking, head to the Bayview Pools, where the kids can zip down water slides while you unwind under a shaded umbrella. Grab light bites from the Tarpon Bar to share poolside as the Gulf breeze drifts in.
As the sky shifts to gold, stroll over to Harborside. Enjoy Italian steakhouse-inspired dishes, fresh seafood, and handcrafted cocktails while gazing over the Yacht Harbour Marina, the perfect elegant conclusion to your first night.
Day 2: Experience the Best of Sanibel Island in One Day
Take a 20- to 25-minute drive to J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge. Explore the scenic wildlife drive by bike or car, spotting iconic birds like roseate spoonbills and white pelicans. Observation towers provide intimate views of the island’s thriving ecosystems.
Make your way to Gramma Dot’s Seaside Saloon, tucked away at the neighboring Sanibel Island and their marina. A locals’ favorite, this casual yet iconic spot serves fresh grouper sandwiches, peel-and-eat shrimp, and classic Key lime pie right by the water. Grab a shaded seat on the dock and watch boats drift in and out of the harbor.
Head to Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum on Periwinkle Way, Sanibel’s charming main street. Dive into Sanibel’s shelling heritage, then browse the nearby artisanal shops:
- Congress Jewelers: Sea life–inspired jewelry and keepsakes for teens and adults
- Beach Daisy Boutique: Casual, comfortable resort wear and accessories for the whole family
- Pinocchio’s: Delicious ice cream, gelato, and sweet treats the whole family will enjoy
Cap off your Sanibel day with dinner at Traders Restaurant. This warm, art-filled spot offers an upscale yet approachable island dining experience, with seasonal seafood specials, expertly crafted cocktails, and a curated wine list. Don’t miss their famous scallops or grouper cheeks if they’re on the menu.
Day 3: Play by the Bay and Relax by the Pool
Fuel up with breakfast at The Clutch Clubhouse before hitting the putting green as a family. With its Gulf views and laid-back vibe, The Clutch offers a memorable way to start the day with a little friendly competition.
In the afternoon, reserve a private cabana at the Bayview Pools and soak in panoramic views of Pine Island Sound. Watch the kids brave the waterslide while you sip something cold with your feet in the water.
As evening settles in, nothing says family time like gathering at Scoops & Slices for delicious pizza, hearty grinders, savory salads, and ice cream sundaes piled high with all your favorite flavors. It’s a spot that brings everyone together with delicious comfort food and good vibes. A great way to keep the family happy and end the night on a high note.
Day 4: Take to the Seas
Wake up to a sun-drenched Captiva morning and head straight to Provisions, South Seas’ market and café, for a quick, flavorful start. Whether you crave a pressed breakfast sandwich, fresh fruit, cold brew coffee, or a hearty wrap to bring along for later, Provisions is your one-stop shop for fuel on the go.
Once packed up, stroll down to the Captiva Landing Marina, now open daily from 8 AM to 4 PM. As your gateway to the Gulf, this newly reopened marina is the launch point for curated water experiences that connect you to the wild beauty of the islands.
Board a private charter or guided excursion from Captiva Landing Marina. Choose your adventure:
- Kayak or paddleboard along mangrove-lined estuaries
- Join a pontoon outing with a stop at a remote shelling beach
- Head out on a guided fishing charter to chase tarpon, snook, or redfish
If you’re docking your own vessel, overnight guests at the marina receive full access to all amenities and Club Captiva Experience during their stay.
Return from the water just in time for sunset. Freshen up, then wind down with cocktails or a coastal dinner at Tarpon Bar, and enjoy the poolside dining.
Day 5: One More Walk, One Last Look
Ease into your final morning with one last beach walk and breakfast at The Clutch Clubhouse. Let the kids revisit their favorite pool while you pack up slowly, soaking in the last views of the Gulf.
Before you go, stop by The Shops at South Seas for souvenirs and snacks for the road. The memories you’ve made, and the sand still in your shoes, will bring you back to South Seas again.
